We have been successful in our application for teams to participate in the Ten Tors 2024 Challenge event on Dartmoor in May 2024. We did not apply for a 55 mile team but if anyone is interested in this age group we can pass you one to a another scout district in the Bristol area. Please contact us (see bottom of page) if you are interested in participating and are in school yr 9 or above . WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL PARTICIPANTS.

For those who missed the Parents and Participants Information Meeting on Saturday 21st October, the presentation slides are available on our Form and Downloads page together with other useful documents e.g. the Mandatory Kit List – please check the required specifications when purchasing new kit (especially those relating to sleeping bags)

Training starts in on 4th November. Teams for Ten Tors 2024

As a district we plan to entered teams for the Ten Tors challenge on Dartmoor which will be on the weekend of 10th-12th May 2024.  We have been allocated teams for both the 35 mile challenge and 45 mile challenge (but not 55 mile team – anyone interested in 55 mile challenge can contact us and we can pass you on to another scout District in the area) so we are seeking candidates to ensure we have enough participants to fill these teams.

Our teams are open to members of all 7 of our district Explorer Scout Units, Young Leaders and older Scouts from any Group in our District, who fall into the following date of birth ranges:

• For the 35 mile Challenge, for those 14 or 15 on 31/08/2024, i.e. in school yr 9 or 10, participants must have been born between 1st September 2008 and 31st August 2010.

• For the 45 mile Challenge,  for those 16 or 17 on 31/08/2024, i.e. in school yr 11 or 12, participants must have been born between 1st September 2006 and 31st August 2008.  The 45 mile Challenge is also open to those who are 15, school yr 10, if they have completed a Ten Tors Challenge previously.

• For the 55 mile Challenge, for those 18 or 19 on 31/08/2024, i.e. in school yr 13 + yr after,  participants must have been born between 1st September 2004 and 31st August 2006.  The 55 mile Challenge is also open to those who are 17, school yr 12, if they have completed a Ten Tors Challenge previously.

For several years we have trained teams which have successfully completed this annual challenge on Dartmoor.  In the past we have had members who were still Scouts, not yet moved up to Explorers, when they started training. The training is progressive so you don’t need to be fully walking fit or even know anything about navigation as you will build up strength and stamina during training and those with an interest in being team navigators will get appropriate training and support. We will hold a parents and participants meeting, in October, once we know that the organisers have approved our application and therefore have confirmation of how many teams we have been granted. The training will start soon after.

For those who are doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award (which should be all Explorers) this can contribute the award as it counts as training for a DofE Expedition and one of the training weekends will be a Bronze Award DofE Qualifying Expedition and one of our training weekends on Dartmoor may be a Silver Award Practice Expedition. The training could also cover the Physical section as “Walking for fitness” or even the Skill section “Navigation skills”.  To register for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme see our DofE page:
