Teams for Ten Tors 2021

As a district we have entered teams for the Ten Tors challenge on Dartmoor which will be on the weekend of 8th-9th May 2021.  We have entered teams for both the 35 mile challenge and 45 mile challenge so we are seeking potential candidates to ensure we have enough participants to fill these teams.

Our teams are open to members of all 7 of our district Explorer Scout Units, Young Leaders and older scouts from any group in our district, who fall into the following date of birth ranges:

• For the 35 mile Challenge (for those 14 or 15 on 31/08/2021) participants must have been born between 1st September 2005 and 31st August 2007.

• For the 45 mile Challenge (for those 16 or 17 on 31/08/2021) participants must have been born between 1st September 2003 and 31st August 2005.  The 45 mile Challenge is also open to those who are 15  if they have completed a Ten Tors Challenge previously.  Note: due to restrictions on sizes of training groups we may limit our 45m teams to being filled only by those who have already previously trained for Ten Tors.

Note: for those in GCSE or A-Level exam years, as the 2021 summer exams have been delayed by 3 weeks, there will not be exams immediately following the event.  Usually GCSE and A-Level exams start immediately after the event.

For several years we have trained teams which have successfully completed this annual challenge on Dartmoor.  In the past we have had members who were still Scouts, not yet moved up to Explorers, when they started training. The training is progressive so you don’t need to be fully walking fit or even know anything about navigation as you will build up strength and stamina during training and those with an interest in being team navigators will get appropriate training and support. We will hold a parents and participants meeting, in October, once we know that the organisers have approved our application and therefore have confirmation of how many teams we have been granted. The training will start soon after.

For those who are doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award (which should be all Explorers) this can contribute the award as it counts as training for the DofE Expedition and one of the weekends will be a Bronze level DofE Award Expedition. The training could also cover the Physical section as “Walking for fitness” or even the Skill section “Navigation skills”.  To register for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme see our DofE page:  https://cesd.org.uk/sections/explorers/dofe/

Please register your interest now by emailing us – see the contact us section at the bottom of this page.
